WELCOME TO THE PATC

The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club...
is a volunteer-based organization, headquartered in Vienna, Virginia. The PATC was founded in 1927 by the visionaries who planned and built the Appalachian Trail. The club now manages more than 1,200 miles of hiking trails in the Mid-Atlantic region, along with cabins, shelters, and hundreds of acres of conserved land.

PATC volunteers contribute tens of thousands of hours of volunteer service every year. Volunteers maintain trails, cabins, and shelters, teach Leave No Trace principles to hikers and backpackers, publish maps and guidebooks, and help manage a busy headquarters operation. In addition to volunteer opportunities, the club offers a busy calendar of recreational events, including hikes, excursions, cross-country ski weekends, and mountaineering trips. The club is always in need of enthusiastic volunteers.

Please visit our HELP WANTED page to learn about currently available volunteer opportunities. Visit the NEWS page for updates concerning the club, our trails, and our trail partners. Register and log on to submit work reports for your volunteer efforts. Registered website users can also submit articles, links, blogs, and calendar events.

You're Invited! Join a PATC Volunteer Work Crew

PATC volunteers build and maintain trails, trailside shelters, and cabins.  Our crews are always looking for new members.  No experience is necessary.  You'll learn new skills, make an important contribution, and meet new friends.  Please consider joining a PATC volunteer work crew.  We'll be highlighting our crews in this space, over the next few months...

dc_crew1.jpgThe DC Crew performs trail work in Rock Creek Park in the District of Columbia.  We meet on Saturdays between April and November to work on projects from erosion control and re-routes to bridge construction.  All volunteers are welcome, either for a day or as regular participants.  No experience necessary.   We meet at the Nature Center in Rock Creek Park at 8:20 AM and carpool to the work site.  Check the calendar for upcoming trips. Volunteer of the Month - March 2010
March 2010 Volunteer of the Month Gene Leese
gene_leese.jpg
Since joining PATC’s North Chapter in 2003, Gene has worked on shelter and cabin construction, trail maintenance, and the Tuscarora Trail relocation on the Reineman tract.  Most notable, however, is Gene’s work as a self-taught stone mason.  Using native stone from the Silberman Trail Center site, Gene did some of the stone facing on the cabin foundation in 2006 and later built a 15-foot tall stone chimney (shown in the photo), barbecue grill, and piers for the recently-completed Silberman summer kitchen.   At the new Burd Run shelter on the Tuscarora, Gene helped lay the block foundation in late November.  He and others plan to complete a stone facing for the foundation in the coming months.  Gene and his family live in McConnellsburg, PA.  His wife Barb and daughters April and Rachel also volunteer on many North Chapter projects, along with canine companion, Sherman. PATC thanks Gene Leese for his many contributions to the Club.
