The Northeast Region of the National Park Service received fifteen nominations for the FY09 George and Helen Hartzog Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The National Park Service created these awards to honor volunteers’ hard work, draw attention to their vast skills and contributions, and to stimulate development of innovative projects and volunteer involvement.
The five award categories are:
Outstanding Volunteer Service, Individual and Group
Outstanding Park VIP Program
Youth Volunteer Award
Enduring Service Award
The exceptional nominations submitted by the Northeast Region are proof of the valuable work our volunteers do in every program area of our parks.
Special thanks to the Volunteer Program Managers/Coordinators, whose support makes this important work possible. It was extremely difficult to select one regional award for each category due to the caliber of the nominations.
Congratulations to the following volunteers who were selected to receive these prestigious awards for their outstanding service:
Outstanding Volunteer Service, Individual
Rita Onorato, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
Outstanding Volunteer Service, Group
Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, Inc., Shenandoah National Park
Outstanding Park VIP Program
Valley Forge National Historical Park
Youth Volunteer Award
Marci Demyon, Colonial National Historical Park
Enduring Service Award
Pat Hegnauer, Weir Farm National Historic Site
These nominations will be forwarded to the Washington, DC office to compete for the national awards in each category. Thank you to those of you who nominated volunteers for their outstanding service to the National Park Service mission.
PATC extends congratulations to all of the PATC volunteers who worked so hard to justly earn this award. It took a collaborative effort of ALL volunteers, not just those in SNP. Those volunteers who maintain trails and perform other tasks in other areas made it possible for SNP volunteers to focus their energies on SNP and make their accomplishments worthy of this high award.
